A Study Shedding Light on the Professional Struggles of Female Paramedics by a BAUN Academic
Authored by academics including Dr. Salih Tosun, Assistant Professor at Balıkesir University (BAUN), Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, the study makes a significant contribution to international literature by addressing the challenges and struggles faced by female paramedics (ambulance and emergency care technicians) in Türkiye.
The study, titled “In the shadow of gender: A phenomenological study on the experiences of discrimination, violence, and professional challenges of female paramedics in Türkiye”, was conducted by Dr. Salih Tosun from BAUN, together with Prof. Dr. Doğa Başar Sarıipek and Prof. Dr. Gökçe Cerev from Kocaeli University, Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of Labour Economics. The article was published in Women’s Studies International Forum, a Q1-ranked journal in international journal indexing.
Providing information about the study, Dr. Salih Tosun emphasized that although women have a significant representation as paramedics in Türkiye’s healthcare system, this presence alone is not sufficient to eliminate field-related prejudices. He noted that female paramedics’ physical competence is sometimes questioned and highlighted that they face greater challenges, particularly during night shifts, in rural assignments, and in interventions requiring physical strength.
